The basic servomotor is made up of five parts. These parts are some type of position sensing device, a DC motor, a control circuit, a gear reduction unit, and an output shaft bearing.
The first part is commonly a potentiometer or some type of position-sensing device. This device allows for the monitoring of the current angle of the motor itself. The signals produced then allow the DC motor to turn so that its shaft is in the appropriate position. The next two parts, a control circuit and a gear reduction unit can then combine to work together with the sensing device and the DC motor so that the servo motor receives control signals, allowing for the desired output into the fifth part: the servo shaft.
The other thing we need to know about the this type of motor relates to its wire connections. The servo motor has three wire connections, each connecting to a different source and ultimately combining to allow the motor to work properly. The first wire connects to a power source, the second wire connects to the ground, and the third wire connects to the control.
It is also important to remember that the power applied to the motor is directly proportional to the distance that the motor needs to travel. For example, if the shaft has a long distance that it must travel, the motor will run at a faster speed. The motor will run at a slower speed if the distance is much smaller. In the industry, this is often referred to as proportional control.
